It is the war I am opposed to – not USA

As a kid, I was a German-hater. This is nothing to boast about, but simply to admit. By principle I kept myself with lower grades in the German language than I had to, all the way to the last terminus at school. On the other hand, I exerted in a parody way of pronouncing both French and English with a German idiot-accent.

This came to pass when I grew a little older, and if you will apologize for my childishness, it is easy to point out what Germany represented to anyone who were born at the end of World War II, and additionally had a Norwegian/French family background… In this way I belong to the first USA-loving generation where the teen revolt were formulated by Elvis Presley and James Dean. I guess this is the case for most people of my generation.

The foreign policy of USA is something quite different, since US of A has become the great mass murderer in our time, and even now the American bombs fall over a defenceless country in Central Asia. This war is a retaliation for the terrorist act that US of A were subjected to the 11th of September 2001, but has simultaneously an unclear objective, and is indeed impossible to «win» in any rational political sense. The only thing that is for sure, is that multiplex more will die under bombs and their consequences than those who died on Manhattan. The war is thus extremely difficult to defend in rational terms, and with political arguments. Therefore this importunate fuss about the critics of this war are «USA-haters», and suffer from some psychiatric disease which is termed «anti-Americanism». To be sure, there was an American politician who first raised the issue after the 11th of September, but soon it was repeated on all leader columns in Sweden, and has now seeped in all the way down to the under vegetation of this debate. A person named Munkhammar, who were declared to be «consular within political analysis», explained in the Evening Post's debate page, that my criticism of the US of A's aggressive mass murder only had to be viewed as USA-hatred and furthermore «blind».

Consular Munkhammar seems to think that I am onset by the Law of Jante, and therefore envious of the US of A, and that I emotionally and «no matter who is right» (!) think that USA are to be ridiculed «due to the matter of balance».

Those who critic the foreign policy of the US of A, and the mass murders, are in clear language not of their right mind. Furthermore, in compliance with consular Munkhammar with others, a person with «his blind USA-criticism gives the Taliban his indirect support». This way of reasoning; that critics of the current mass murder are psychiatric irresponsible and objectively supporters of terrorism, oppression of women, and all other wretchedness, has thus from our leaderpages

Det här sättet att resonera, att kritiker av det pågående massmordet är psykiskt otillräkneliga och objektivt anhängare av terrorism, kvinnoförtryck och allt övrigt elände, har alltså från våra ledarsidor brett ut sig ända bort till diskussionens småskojare som konsult Munkhammar och de grobianer som i inläggen på nätet hotar att bränna mina böcker. Talet om USA-hat påminner delvis om argumentet att den som kritiserar Israels ockupationspolitik är antisemit. Ingen kan ju värja sig mot en sådan anklagelse eftersom ingen kan bevisa sin egen oskuld. Hur skall jag visa att jag inte är USA-hatare? Det räcker inte med att ha skrivit tio romaner om en halvt amerikaniserad spionhjälte, numera pensionerad i sitt älskade San Diego? Anklagelsen är avsedd att såga av all diskussion och utdefiniera all form av kritik mot pågående amerikanska massmord som blott utslag av psykisk sjukdom. Men det mest skrämmande är att historien nu upprepar sig som i en skrattspegel. Talet om anti-amerikanism används nämligen på exakt samma sätt som talet om anti-sovjetism förr i världen. Anti-sovjetism var enligt den tidens logik just en blandning mellan sinnessjukdom och brott. Den som kunde avfärdas som anti-sovjetisk hade inte i en seriös diskussion att göra.
  Det kan förefalla som om det bara vore frågan om ett debattknep från den sida som har svårt att finna verkliga argument för att försvara sin tro – det är ju inte lätt att logiskt förklara hur det pågående massmordet gagnar demokrati och framsteg i världen, eller ens kampen mot terrorismen. Liksom det inte är lätt att försvara Israels ständigt pågående brott mot folkrätten. Men den envetenhet med vilket talet om USA-hat upprepas, den självklarhet med vilket begreppet hanteras från det politiska ledarskapet och de politiska skribenterna ner till grottmänniskorna på nätet, får mig att missmodigt tro att detta hädanefter skall bliva vår musik. Den som är mot massmord även i de fall de utförs av den amerikanska krigsmakten är inte riktigt klok. Så skall det bli. När George Orwell skrev sin roman 1984 kunde nog inte ens han i sin djupa pessimism föreställa sig att det totalitära tänkande han då kritiserade skulle återuppstå ett halvt århundrade senare – i Väst! Tänk på det. I Väst! Här hos oss, nu år 2001. Det är i sanning en mardröm.
